Rain, rain, go away

Perth has had an exceptionally wet winter this year. The constant rain can leave puddles in our streets, soggy shoes, and a lot of us feeling a bit low. The inability to get outside to exercise, or to do some of the things we enjoy, can drain motivation and energy.

It is natural to wish the rain or our uncomfortable feelings would simply go away. Many of us quietly hope for instant relief from low mood or lack of motivation. But the truth is there is no magic fix.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a helpful perspective. Our feelings are like the weather. Clouds come and clouds go. Storms pass, and the sun shines in its own time. Trying to force away difficult emotions usually leads to more frustration. Instead, ACT encourages noticing our feelings, accepting them, and letting them move through us without letting them control what we do.

One simple tool from ACT is the Choice Point. Imagine a fork in the road. On one side we can avoid discomfort, on the other we can take steps toward our values. When motivation is low or feelings are stormy, values act like a compass, guiding our actions.

For example, if you value connection, creativity, or physical health, small steps like calling a friend, drawing, or taking a short walk bring you closer to living a meaningful life. Over time, these actions can lift your mood naturally, like the sun breaking through the clouds.

When the rain keeps falling, remember clouds and feelings both pass. You cannot make the storm disappear, but you can keep moving toward what matters. Motivation is fickle, and healing takes time. Let your values guide you, and you will keep making progress, even on the wettest of days.
